Cafe CLIL - History CLIL

Café CLIL 27 – History CLIL

In this episode of Café CLIL we look at History CLIL with a guest appearance from Thomas Ziegelwagner who is a History teacher who teaches his subject through English in a Business College in St Polten, Austria. Thank you Thomas!
We cover a range of topics. Thomas shares his views on why he teaches through English, and what would make it attractive to other History teachers. He also describes the effect of learning History through English for his students. We also asked him to say what is there in History as a subject that language teachers could take and use in their classrooms.
Phil and I expand on these themes, and mention the ‘can do’ and ‘why not’ attitude both Thomas mentions and Patrick in an earlier podcast (linked here).
Sadly, we couldn’t hear the wonderful Billy Joel – We Didn’t Start the Fire, Google it!
Thomas contributed to a FACT Journal (33) with an article on using song in History which is linked. Another integrated approach to the curriculum is mentioned with a historical focus on Global Warming and that is also linked here.
We also discuss the decline in PISA scores for reading, and how History surely plays a central role in improving critical thinking skills AND a CLIL approach can help focus on these skills even further. (So, if you want to improve PISA scores in reading, do it through CLIL!)
Heartfelt thanks to Thomas, lovely contribution!
