Cafe CLIL 24 - Art CLIL II - A Shower of Ideas

Art CLIL II – Shower Of Ideas (07.08.26)

Café CLIL 24 – Art CLIL part II (Shower of Ideas), after Julia Mena Dobson’s cracking ‘big picture’ take on teaching Art CLIL through English in the last episode, we focus on a host of specific examples from the classroom practice in Anglia
School. Diana Dimitrova is not only my school manager, she is a great English teacher and also an artist who embraces her passion for art to teach English.

So, if you teach young learners, if you’ve wondered about dipping into art in your English class, or you teach art and are looking for ways and means of embracing English in your class, tune in!
You will find many examples of different art techniques to use with your learners, as well as examples of language areas which can be found and practiced while learning these techniques.
Phil stresses that many of the ideas can also be adated for learners of different ages and my takeaway from this episode is how these art activities bring the learning right down to the learners’ level. Art allows learners to slow down their thinking, to concetrate very precisely on what is before them and creativity more widely. To leave the last word with Diana, she makes the observation that she has noticed how art develops confidence in her learners. As they try, they gain self-confidence and rely less on the teacher, so we have art as a medium for developing self-reliance (as well as English through CLIL).
