The China Dialogue website is a forum for discussion on major global environmental issues not just important for both China and the UK, but which affect the whole world.

The idea behind the China Dialogue language project is to offer visitors the opportunity to become better informed about the environment but at the same time improve their English through news items in this area.

There are many tasks in the language section ranging from a focus on terminology, through listening and reading to note taking and extended writing.

There are tasks for developing listening skills with recordings of the news items and dictation and gap fill work with the texts...

...visitors can check their answers with a key or with sample answers written by us.

The vocabulary check is an interactive glossary of terms where visitors click on a word in the news article...

...to see an explanation of the meanings of the words in their specific contexts.

The read and gap fill tasks offer drop-down menus with multiple choice terms and texts to put into the gaps which can then be given a score and checked with the correct answers.

There is also a reading comprehension section which enables the reader to write in their answers in fields provided...

...and then check them with our samples when they have finished.

True or false tasks also take content from the news items and challenge readers to say whether or not they are true or not but also write in an explanation which can be checked with our samples.

The reading and note taking tasks ask readers to summarise the articles with key words and phrases in a logical sequence and then compare with samples provided on the site.

There is also a China Dialogue Language Doctor where useful structures and language are taken from the article and presented, explained and expanded with further examples.

The readers are also asked to participate in a regular characteristic of the site which is the discussion forum and leave postings with their opinions on the environmental issues discussed in the articles.  The language work is a step towards enabling more people to become involved in the debate.

It's still very new and we'd appreciate any feedback.  Our evaluation sheet can be downloaded here CD Language Evaluation.  Please send your evaluation and comments to me at keithpkelly@yahoo.co.uk and help us improve the site.

Yours

Keith
